Exploration Vocab- Slavery in Americas-

Indentured servitude- People choose to become servants in exchange for a life in a new world. Usually 7years

Middle Passage- Voyage from Africa to a new life in the Americas with horrible living conditions for the passengers.

Triangle Trade- from England took guns to trade for slaves from Africa, dropped off slaves to make sugar cane in the Caribbean, took sugar cane to New England for more guns

Bartolome de las Casas- A Spanish priest who protested strongly against harsh treatment of slaves

Penal Colony- A colony where criminals are sent for punishment- Australia or Alcatraz

Focus Question:
The Columbian Exchange refers to the transfer of goods and cultures between the Americas and Europe starting in the 1500s.  Name two positive effects, and one negative one, of this exchange on the lands that participated in it.

Positive Affects
New animals- horses, pigs, cows
New crops- chocolate, bananas, rice, wheat, potatoes, corn,
New Ideas- iron tools, wheel,


Negative Affects-
Disease- 90% of natives died from small pox
Slavery
Forcing ideas/beliefs  or death

I think it is so sad about the middle passage how the slaves wondered what they did to deserve this
